Still more frenzied construction to occur in WA. Premier Alan Carpenter has just announced a humungous upgrade of the Barrack St waterfront area.
When I was back in Perth in 2000, I remember the Premier at the time, Liberal Richard Court, copping heaps of flak for building a bell tower there at a cost of just over 5 million bucks, a tiny fraction of the projected cost of this latest project.
The local squitterati kept quacking on about what a flagrant waste of taxpayers' money it was. And as this Wikipedia entry details, a campaign by Labor tightwads meant that the completed structure was 35 metres shorter than originally intended.
Wonder if these same frugal types will condemn Carpenter's plan ...
