Didn't see the Great Global Warming Swindle since I'm in the middle of a move and have just sold my teev. But I did hear the post-show interview with Durkin and the forum discussion on the radio last night. Fascinating stuff.
Does sound like Durkin has made some boo-boos, and is being provocative. However, he's done something very valuable: he's put dents in an all-pervasive and heretofore sacrosanct orthodoxy and kickstarted a real and open debate about it.
The panellists duking it out afterwards also revealed that the concept of man-made global warming is far from airtight; it's still just a theory like so many others. Gave a lot of people food for thought -- which is exactly why lockstep, group-think ferndies hate the doco so much.
Just a general thought on the possibility that so many experts can get something so wrong:
Science is like art, right? Both disciplines are about finding and expressing the truth; telling a story about reality. Scientists use mainly logic and empirical data ... and their imaginations. Artists (painters, writers, musos, etc) rely most heavily on their twisted psyches, infantile emotions, drugs ... and their imaginations. (There's actually not a huge amount of difference between 'em when you think about it!)
Now, see if you can name a politically incorrect, right-wing Oz artist (one who agrees with Durkin, for instance).
Can't do it, can ya?
The main reason: artists are dependant on government funding. Lefties completely dominate the funding bodies, bureaucracies, etc. They also dominate the mainstream media outlets, which all artists must court to become known to the public. Any artist who has the temerity to question the PC orthodoxy just doesn't get a guernsey. Everybody inside and outside Artsville knows it, but the enforcers of the dogma continue to deny it.
So, to climate science: Boffins are also hugely dependant on government funding. So why isn't it possible that a similar process can't be happening in science?
Forgive me for mangling the language a tad, but here's my point: The global warming theory's dominance is not a huge conspiracy; it's a bloody great conformity.
Good to know that post-Swindle this is fracturing and other voices are being heard.
