Watched Angel Heart last night. Great line from Mephistopheles, played by Robert De Niro:
"The future isn't what it used to be."
Seems that the film is not the original source. Turns out to be Yogi Berra, of all people.
Still, sounded particularly pithy coming from such a no-nonsense pragmatist.
You can apply it to just about any context and it's relevant! Think about global warming. Twenty years ago, who would have thought we'd now be in the thrall of such a bizarre cult? (And think of the present. What will the doomsayers of today do if we keep pumping out the carbon and their predicted apocalypse doesn't transpire?)
Whatever does happen in decades hence you can be absolutely sure of one thing: it's never quite what you expect.
