Here we go. Economically unsustainable amendments must be made because sea lion pups are getting caught in rock lobster nets. Here's Jon Ford, WA's Fisheries Minister, on the poor pups' predicament:
"For a sea lion the freshly caught lobsters are like a bain marie - they just can't help themselves so dive in for a feed, but unfortunately some never manage to get back out again."
Well, serves 'em right. Greedy little bastards!
I've only chowed down on roasted sea lion pup on a couple of occasions, but I can assure you it was delicious. Why don't they start selling that? It's a win-win:
Pups get culled. Lobster numbers go way up. Then we lay off the pups, hit the lobsters again. And so on ...
Easy, peasy.
