Telstra is in major damage control mode with this WotNext scandal.
I understand that this particular service is being condemned in isolation primarily because of exposure to whippersnappers. Still, the outrage does seem a tad selective. I mean, what about all those phone sex lines? Telstra profits from them, doesn't it? (Then there's all the, er, amateur stuff that crackles across the phone lines nightly. That's probably an even bigger earner for them!)
Seems to me to be a perennial problem that arises whenever you've got a medium with a lot of eyeballs (or earlobes) pointing your way. You're mad if you don't start raking in advertising revenue. And there's no doubt that a fair whack of those advertisers will be selling something related to schtupping, however indirectly.
Look in the back sections of any metropolitan daily or local paper. Most are chockas with phone sex and brothel ads. I always find it amusing that the salaries of wowser columnists are paid -- at least in part -- by the revenue created by hookers hocking their wares.
So, this kind of stuff is gonna happen no matter what. Question is: where do you draw the line?
I don't know the answer. And quite frankly I don't think anybody else does either ...
No, wait! That's completely wrong. I do know the answer. I was just trying to sound fashionably world weary and cynical.
